Suspended following complaint about sexist posters for IWD

I received this forwarded email today - copied as it was but without the names of the person or college - Sexual discrimination is indeed still alive and well it seems - outrageous!
[college] decided to celebrate International Womens Day by giving the women a red rose by a 'man in a grey suit' - the posters for this stated 'all women love a bit of romance' (This is another 'you couldn't make it up' event). [ ] objected to this (sadly only one of three prepared to put... objections in writing) and got an email back from... head of HR saying that this had been noted and it would not be going ahead and the posters would be changed. [ ] offered the Social Science students to do presentations for the plasma screens and [ ] thought this was the end of it.
However today [ ] found that they had changed the posters but the event would be going ahead with the roses. [ ] wrote again saying this was ironic as this mirrored the way that womens rights were dealt with - a public avowal of one thing whilst underneath its the same old same old. He came down to see [ ] and attempted to argue well this is the culture of the students and they want to do this - [ ] made all the arguments you would expect, he then (as it was in the staffroom) asked for a private meeting on the subject - [ ] said if he wanted a private meeting then [ ] wanted notice of the meeting subject and reserved the right to bring a union rep - he then said he ordered [ ] to meet him in private [ ] repeated what [ ] had said so he said right you are suspended, get your things and go. So [ ] went !

2012 and a women is suspended for not accepting the line that giving a woman a rose on IWD is somehow wrong ????!! Watch this space.
However, having removed names above - it would be in the interests of Cherry and women in general to complain so further information is here if you wish to support her.

Dear Ann

I write in support of your EIS-FELA member Cherry Hopton who has been suspended, somewhat incredibly for rightly objecting to the event planned at Angus College to commemorate International Women's Day. The notion that every woman needs or wants some 'romance' in their lives is demeaning and sexist and she should have been congratulated by management for pointing that out. To be suspended for raising the issue is little short of sexual discrimination.

Please feel free to pass this on to any parties you deem appropriate and please be assured of my support for any action the FELA Branch decide to embark upon in defence of Cherry.
